My Humble Nit Wits Beginnings

Nit Wits #34: Chicken Eggo by Chris DunmireI Am a Nit Wit

By Chris Dunmire

My favorite part of the newspaper has always been the comics section. I'd anxiously await for the Sunday paper to arrive at our house and then seek out the few exciting colorful pages hidden amongst the thick sections of "adult" pages. Even now, the comics are the highlight of any newspaper I might happen upon.

I've always thought that the most exciting careers in the world belonged to Charles Schulz (Peanuts), Jim Davis (Garfield), Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes), and scores of other cartoonists who injected some lightheartedness into the daily paper of current events and often not-so-good news. What it must feel like to have your "work" be drawing comic strips every day!

I've aspired for a long time to become part of this humor movement and thus created Nit Wits in 2002, a comic based on my own world perceptions and creative outlook on life. In the same vein as The Far Side and other one-panel comic strips that make you stop and ponder what's going on, Nit Wits is my own way of expressing familiar ideas and ordinary things with a clever twist. You may find them funny or corny, but surely a different way to look at things in a new, creative light.

Oh, and I might not yet (or ever!) qualify to play in the major leagues of comic stripping, but who knows — maybe someday when Ziggy or Family Circus retires there might be room for Nit Wits. If not, you can always find them here. Until then, I'll keep developing my cartooning skills and share my nit wit humor with those who get it. — Chris Dunmire, 2003
