Belief Berry Booster

By Dan Goodwin

Creativity CookiesOur beliefs about how creative we are define how creative we are going to be. Your beliefs are the equivalent of a glass ceiling on your creativity’s rocket ship. If that ceiling is so low you bang your head every time you even try to stand up, let alone launch a rocket ship, then it’s no surprise you’re not reaching anywhere near your creative potential.

This Creativity Cookie is called “Belief Berry Booster” and will help you start to give your creative self belief the boost it needs to reach new levels.

Little Nibble:

As with many areas where we struggle, the first step is to take an honest appraisal of where you are right now. Honesty and reality are the key words here, it does no-one any favours, least of all you, to pretend things are different to what they are. With that appraisal, you can move forward positively.

So take a large sheet of paper and write in the centre: “I believe my creativity...”

Then fill the page with as many statements as you can, both positive and negative. You might say “I believe my creativity is unlimited and infinite.”You might also say “I believe my creativity is negligible, compared to other artists.” Write every version of that sentence you can think of. Start another page if you need to.

Big Bite:

What you now have is a collection of your beliefs around creating and your creativity. Already you’ll no doubt have some that are already positive. Write those out on a separate sheet, so you have them all together.

Next, to work on the less than positive beliefs that remain. For each negative or limiting belief, you can turn it around and replace it with a positive. For example, you might have something like: “I believe my creativity is limited, and I’ll only have a few good ideas in my whole life.”

Turning this around, you can instead write: “I believe my creativity is a bottomless well spring. Ideas will flow to me today, tomorrow and every day until I draw my final breath!”

Take each negative belief, turn it around, and write the positive version on your list of positives. Some negatives you can turn around in a number of ways, so write those down too.

You’ll now have a page (or more!) of positive belief boosting statements around your creativity!
